Access to electronic information resources, including the Internet and School District 14 local and wide area networks, is a privilege with responsibilities for the user. If a School District 14 user violates any of these guidelines, his or her access privileges may be revoked and school disciplinary action could be taken.

The smooth operation of all networks relies upon the proper conduct of the end user who must adhere to strict guidelines. In general, these guidelines require the effective, efficient, ethical, moral and legal utilization of resources. The following regulations are provided to define the responsibilities of any Manitou Springs School District 14 user.

1. Use of telecomputing resources must be supportive of educational objectives and consistent with the mission and curriculum of Manitou Springs School District 14.

2. Transmission of any material in violation of any local, federal and state laws is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to: copyrighted material, licensed material, and threatening or obscene material.

3. Intentional use of telecomputing resources to access or process pornographic material, inappropriate text or graphic files, or files dangerous to the integrity of the network is prohibited.

4. Software and/or services for telecomputing access must be approved by District 14.

5. Use of telecomputing resources for unauthorized commercial activities, product advertisement or religious or political lobbying is prohibited.

6. Users are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette.

7. Manitou Springs School District 14 makes no guarantees of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. Manitou Springs School District 14 will not be responsible for any losses suffered. This includes loss of data resulting from delays, no deliveries, mis-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by its negligence or by a user’s errors or omissions.

8. Users acknowledge that Manitou Springs School District 14 is not responsible for actions of any user or the character or inaccuracy of any information accessed. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at the user’s risk.

9. Users will be held personally and financially responsible for malicious or intentional damage done to network software, data, user accounts, hardware and/or unauthorized costs incurred.

10. Files stored on district-managed networks remain the property of the school district and, as such, may be inspected at any time.

11. Users may not spread untruths about, show disrespect toward, or misrepresent any person, group or organization.

12. Students will receive grade-level appropriate training by staff.

Students will have the privilege of access to the local and wide area network resources of the school district if they comply with the above guidelines. Access to networks beyond the management of the school district requires that the student user and parent/guardian sign this agreement.
